Week commencing 4th September,2017

What a fantastic start 5S have made to the new school year! We have been very impressed with the children's attitude to learn and focus this week, despite it being a long week after the summer holiday.

It was lovely to meet many of you on Wednesday at our parent meeting. For those of you who were unable to attend, we have sent spare copies of the information we went through and a reading list with questions.

In Maths this week we have been revising place value and using column addition to add 4 digit numbers. We will be moving onto subtraction next week and investigating palindromic numbers.

We began our new unit in Literacy entitled "poets voices". The children have enjoyed reading poems by Charles Causely and using using his poems as models to create their own poems. We will be studying poems by Michael Rosen next week.

Our topic this half term will be Space. You should have received a parent mail today informing you of a trip to the Space Centre in Leicester on September 25th. Your children will need to be in school for 8.15am we are aiming to leave school at 8.30am and will return around 4pm. Please could we ask for reply slips as soon as possible. Your child has also been asked to keep a moon diary for September. Please can you encourage them to observe the moon each night.

We began our new Geography topic "Climate Change"this week too. We have been studying the impact on people in Gambia due to unreliable rainfall. There is so much news around climate change and it is imperative we talk to children about all the impacts that climate change is having around the world. Please send in any updated news articles.

In RE the children have been discussing the meaning of our school's mission statement and learning more about St Dominic. We hope you enjoyed the mass today.

Finally, we have talked about the importance of following our class rules this year and of developing perseverance and independence. We are pleased that the children have worked hard to meet the new challenges and expectations of year 5.

Enjoy your weekend. We hope the children have a good rest after a busy first week back!

Mrs Sandhu and Mrs Debenham.
